Case Study: Brightview x Booster

Brightview Saves Budget & Increases Labor Efficiency with Booster Fuel Delivery

Brightview Landscaping is a commercial landscaping services and maintenance company offering everything from planning and design through maintenance and sustainability practices in Southern California. With nearly 100 years of history in the region, the team at Brightview still focuses on the values that their original founders instilled in the company in 1939: Putting the client at the center, nurturing relationships, and delivering a proactive approach to landscape needs.

Landscapers like Brightview face unique challenges alongside traditional fleet concerns like fuel cost and efficiency. They often have the added burden of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment, increasing their dependence on fuel. Larger landscaping companies can maintain on-site fuel tanks to top off equipment day-to day, but smaller companies have to rely on gas cans they fill during fueling trips. Mobile fuel delivery can help companies of all sizes keep this equipment fueled either by delivering to on-site fuel tanks or by filling fuel cans directly during planned delivery stops. Brightview came to Booster 4 years ago looking for solutions to help streamline their fuel costs and better equip their team with the fuel they needed every shift, and for every vehicle and piece of equipment.

The Challenge

At Brightview, costs were becoming a concern. Fuel costs per gallon were high, and labor costs were also increasing in their prime market: California.

Labor costs tend to be particularly high for landscaping companies. Crews typically have 4–6 employees per vehicle, which makes fuel stops expensive. A single 30-minute stop doesn’t just cost 30 minutes – it costs anywhere from 2 to 3 hours in labor when you add up the amount you are paying individuals and tack it onto the fuel price. For example, 5 employees on a 30-minute stop equates to 2.5 hours of lost labor per stop. For a 15-vehicle operation fueling 3x per week, that adds up to 100+ hours of labor that you’re paying for – all to sit in a vehicle while it’s being fueled at a commercial pump.

When Brightview came to us, their needs were simple:

  • Understand just where they were allocating fuel dollars

  • Lower their fuel spend across the company

  • Decrease the amount of time their team was spending managing fueling needs across their services

We got started immediately.

Our Solution

When Brightview came to Booster, we saw multiple opportunities to help their team tighten their fuel budgets. Mobile fuel delivery for landscapers is a logical and efficient solution when one of the biggest challenges is fueling vehicles without requiring full team participation.

As with all of our clients, we began with a free analysis to really understand where money was being spent. Operationally, landscaping companies face challenges with small equipment and gas can fueling. It’s time-consuming, difficult to track, and often leads to inconsistent reporting on fuel usage across crews and job sites. Our free fuel analysis helps us understand just what our clients are already spending.

We are now delivering gasoline to 14 Brightview sites in Southern California, fueling their vehicles and equipment 1 to 3x each week and delivering nearly 13,000 gallons of fuel across the company. This includes fueling vehicles and on-site fuel storage tanks so that they are able to fill gas cans and small equipment that may need more frequent fueling than 1-3x weekly. By visiting multiple locations, multiple times per week, Brightview’s team can focus on what they do best: delivering high quality, customer-centric services. No one has to circle a metro area looking for the most affordable gasoline or waste up to 30 minutes at a station filling fuel cans and their vehicles. Their trucks are ready, and their equipment is fueled with backup cans for particularly labor-heavy shifts.
