Case Study: Cintas x Booster

Booster Eliminates Refueling Trips, Saving Cintas Time &
Preventing Fraud

Cintas is one of the largest facilities services platforms in North America, with tens of thousands of employees, over a million customers, and billions in recurring revenue tied to the delivery of uniforms, safety compliance needs, facility hygiene materials, and fire protection services for local businesses. With more than 20,000 vehicles in their fleets across North America, efficiency is a vital component of their business successes, and Booster is a proud partner in helping them reduce downtime for their drivers and and preventing costly fuel card misuse.

Booster allows our service providers to just get in their truck and go. To see their customers and not have to worry about fuel. They know that their truck is going to be filled when they come back in. It’s a good thing. It’s cost savings for us, but they can see the impact it has when they can just go — They don’t have to worry.

The Challenge

Fleet managers for Cintas’s Hayward, California operation came to Booster nearly a decade ago with a problem. Their drivers were losing as much as 30 minutes each time they had to go out and fuel their trucks and vans at traditional fueling stations. This wasn’t laziness or dawdling on the part of the drivers. This was just a reality. Between driving to find the best price, physically fueling the vehicles, and interacting with other customers and staff at the gas station, the minutes just added up. Let’s look at the math:

  • If trucks need to be refueled on average 15 times per month, that translates to 450 minutes per month that drivers spend refueling.

  • Over the course of a year, this adds up to 90 hours for each driver and each truck. That’s 90 hours not spent serving customers, and 90 hours of employee time and salary.

  • When the industry average salary for drivers is $25.24/hour, fueling trips will cost a company more than $2,200 per driver per year.

In addition to this wasted time and money, Cintas fleet managers were finding spending creep and fuel card misuse. Fuel spend was rising even when budgets were not. Fuel card misuse is a common problem for fleets. Teams pass out individual cards to drivers as a way to streamline their fuel payment operations and eliminate the need for individual reimbursement, and to benefit from fuel card incentive programs. The more people with individual cards in their hands, the more risk of fraud and misuse.

Our Solution

Booster’s mobile fuel delivery solution eliminates fueling trips for Cintas drivers and enables their team to redirect that time and energy to the business goal that matters most: customer service.

We began in Hayward, delivering gasoline and diesel weekly with fuel card integrations so that Cintas could continue to receive benefits of that program while collecting all the individual cards that were being used by individual drivers. The Cintas team was able to watch costs drop and fuel efficiency rise with Booster’s customer portal that accurately tracks truck-by-truck fueling data. The Hayward team was so impressed with the results that they have already expanded Booster delivery services to their San Leandro fleet.

  • On-site fuel delivery of gasoline delivery Monday, Wednesday & Friday and diesel delivery Tuesday & Thursday

  • Redirected fuel card use for fuel payment only through our fuel card integration instead of through individual drivers

  • Transparent fuel delivery and fuel use data through Booster’s customer portal

Using Booster streamlines Cintas’s fuel needs and fuel reporting efficiently. At the heart of their mission is excellent customer service. The time saved from fueling trips allows for greater face time with customers which they consider a key metric for success. Our service providers and easy-to-use dashboard keeps drivers behind the wheel and management informed.
